Henry Wessel, Happy Valentine’s Day, 1976
Legendary SFAI Photo Faculty member, Hank Wessel donated a variant of his Happy Valentine’s Day photograph to SFAI’s 1985 “Artists’ Valentines” auction to benefit the School. These Valentine Auctions were a wonderful staple of the Bay Area Art Community of the 1980s--organized by the Artists Committee and the School. The 1985 auction had wonderful art by dozens of artists including Richard Alpert, Sandra Kazanjian, Bob Colescott, John DeFazio, Mike Henderson, Jess, Shari Lamanet, Geroge Kuchar, Mary Lovelace O’Neal, Deborah Oropallo, Richard Shaw, Al Wong, and a portion of Bruce Conner’s 16mm film, Marilyn Times Five.
Of course, the best designed promo piece for any of these auctions is the 1986 "vAleNTIne MaStErPieceS" flyer for the STUDENT auction in the Diego Rivera Gallery with its Ransom Note typeface promising a BiG BaSh with the HOttEsT fUnK SoUNd WIth D.j. doNna ReGO from the StuD baR.
