“The Art Institute shaped and formed me as a person. I was a little baby dyke and I wore a fedora and an overcoat and I wandered with my Rolleiflex and I looked through it and I tried to frame the world. Photographers bear witness…We are bearing witness at a historical time throughout the world and it is our job to actually create a conversation around it.”-------From Catherine Opie’s 2020 SFAI Honorary Doctorate Address. A 2019 Guggenheim recipient, Opie has been a longtime esteemed faculty member at UCLA.
