This 2001 group portrait of the “Tribute Dinner for Jerry Burchard” was taken by Art Rogers who taught at SFAI from 1969 to 1974. (apologies for the quality of this reproduction). The occasion was to honor Jerry’s attachment to SFAI, first as a student in the 1950s and the photo documentarian of Bruce Conner’s Rat Bastard Protective Association, then as a long time faculty member beginning in the 1960s. Rogers captures the camaraderie of like-minded art photographers gathering together--eating and drinking in the SFAI Cafe. A good crowd that sure seemed to know how to pose and get their mugs into the picture---all staring at the master photographer. The only one with their eyes closed (obviously on purpose) was Jerry himself, front and center.
With permission, SFAA is re-posting the emails Jeff Gunderson Librarian/Archivist Anne Bremer Memorial Library has been sending out since March 2020. Please enjoy this magnificent archive.
