Culture Under Fire: Censorship vs. Arts Activism: Setting the Agenda for the ‘90s


In June, 1990 SFAI held a symposium to discuss the Federal Government’s onslaught on and censorship of art and art activism. David Levi-Strauss delivered the keynote speech, “The Big Picture.”  Panel topics included “Present & Future: Addressing the Current Arts Emergency and Setting the Agenda for the ‘90s;” “The Good Fight: Artists & Activists;” “Edifices of Power: The Role of Institutions;” and:“Cries & Whispers: Sexuality and Censorship” which included Jerome Caja, Marlon Riggs, Minnette Lehman, et al and was moderated by Dorothy Allison with readings by Kevin Killian and Dodie Bellamy. Other participants at the Culture Under Fire conference included Larry Rinder, Christine Tamblyn, Robbie Conal, Joe Goode, Betty Kano, Yolanda Lopez, Robert Atkins, Dewey Crumpler, Renny Pritikin, Jello Biafra, and V. Vale.  And also a performance by Theory Girls.
