The first issue of Artforum (June 1962) and the 1962-'63 SFAI College Catalog
The first issue of Artforum was published in San Francisco as a West Coast counterpoint to the New York City-centric art publications of the time. For its first few years when in S.F., Artforum was riddled with news of all aspects of California art, artists, and squabbles. Designed by SFAI faculty member James Robertson, the magazine’s distinctive square format mimicked SFAI’s square College Catalog which also must have been designed by Robertson.
With permission, SFAA is re-posting the emails Jeff Gunderson Librarian/Archivist Anne Bremer Memorial Library has been sending out since March 2020. Please enjoy this magnificent archive.
