Pirkle Jones and Ruth-Marion Baruch met during the Fall 1946 photo classes taught by Ansel Adams and Minor White. Pirkle was a GI who grew up in Louisiana, Indiana, and Ohio. Ruth-Marion was from NYC by way of the University of Missouri and Ohio University where she had received the first MFA in Photography, but realized she needed more. Ansel officiated at their wedding in Yosemite in 1949. The couple went on to do two fascinating collaborative projects—“Walnut Grove: Portrait of a Town,” in 1961 and, with the permission of Kathleen and Eldridge Cleaver, “A Photographic Essay on the Black Panthers.” Pirkle taught at SFAI until his retirement in 1996.
