1947 Ellen Bransten, Ansel Adams, SFAI Photo Department, Hardboiled Realism

The cover of the September 1947 SFAA Newsletter included a full reproduction of a terrific photo by Ellen Bransten who was having an exhibition of her work at the de Young Museum--"several portraits and landscapes, along with studies of hardboiled realism.”  Bransten, studied at SFAI in the VERY FIRST classes taught by Ansel Adams.  Ansel had set up a sequence of two three week sessions at the end of 1945 and the beginning of 1946 as he contemplated how to inaugurate the full SFAI Photo Department in the summer and fall of 1946. Bransten was also instrumental in the beginning of aperture magazine at SFAI, as one of its “sustaining subcribers.”

With permission, SFAA is re-posting the emails Jeff Gunderson Librarian/Archivist Anne Bremer Memorial Library has been sending out since March 2020. Please enjoy this magnificent archive.
