1906 SF Fire & SFAI

In April, 1906, the San Francisco earthquake triggered a set of fires which destroyed much of the city, including the San Francisco Art Institute, then known as the Mark Hopkins Institute of Art, located at the top of Nob Hill (seen here on the far right). Artists did their best to illustrate the calamity like in this painting by William Coulter, when they probably should have been saving the School’s library collection.

With permission, SFAA is re-posting the emails Jeff Gunderson Librarian/Archivist Anne Bremer Memorial Library has been sending out since March 2020. Please enjoy this magnificent archive.
