Three options for student loan forgiveness
Hello! I am about a year away from student loan forgiveness from my MFA, even though I have been doing work in the public sector unrelated to my fine arts degree. I wanted to make sure SFAI alumni were aware that this program is a legit option for your art school loans! Despite the recent Supreme Court ruling, there are still three programs that could pertain to SFAI students with student loan debt:
Closed school discharge of student loans - If you were enrolled or withdrew from SFAI in its final years, you may be eligible for this program:
https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/closed-school
Teacher loan forgiveness - If you have taught full time for 5 years at a primary or secondary school, you can apply for this:
https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/teacher
Public service loan forgiveness - 120 loan payments while working in the public or non-profit sector qualifies you for this, even if it is work not related to your degree! I used this for my public university teaching and research.
https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/forgiveness-cancellation/public-service
In my experience, employers are happy to process these forms for their employees and the online registration process is fairly easy. Please look into it and see if you are eligible! These programs might not be around forever.
Be well,

Fibres - Textile and Technology
Deadline: February 4, 2022
Fee to apply: $5 per piece
Group Exhibition at AIR Gallery, England
Textile making traditions spans global cultures as one of the earliest human technologies. It has been a staple in industry, fashion, craft and decorative arts throughout the ages but it particularly made a resurgence in the 1960s back into the contemporary art world. Since then Fibre and textile arts have been developing new forms and language -becoming more conceptual and cross-disciplinary, even into this digital age.
We're are seeking works that explore (but are not limited to) the following areas:
Textiles (Fibre art, Ecology, Upcycling, Craft, Natural vs Synthetic materials, Traditional vs contemporary methods of making, Materiality, Cross-disciplinary art)
Technology (Fibre optics, making and machinery of modern textiles, video/film, animation, VR, 3D printing, digital responses to textiles and fibres)
We are particularly interested in works that cross over between the two but this is not essential. Works can explore their own themes but there must have a link to the idea of textiles, materiality or fibres in some form.
This will accumulate in a group exhibition that will explore the the relationship between textiles and technology; between the ecology and the digital that will take place in March 2023.

Plant Life for London Reader
Deadline: November 15, 2022
Location: Based in London, England
Fee to apply: n/a
Online & print publication
Open Call: Plant Life
Stories, poems, essays, and art about the secret lives of plants and the people who live with them
Is there something strange about that person with a hundred house plants? Or something enviable? Plant collecting can be an eccentric addiction, but house plants and patio gardening kept many connected to nature during Covid lockdowns. A walk in the quiet forest can be rejuvenating. What do plant people know that others don’t? A time lapse video of a house plant shows instead a house pet. Electrical signals in a tree can play a beautiful symphony. Beds of seaweed and forests are the lungs of the planet. Vegetation is the ultimate source of all our food and all our oxygen. Plants have been on this planet for over 500 million years, the Amazon forest is over 10 million years old, and individual redwoods on the West Coast of America are over 4,000 years old—yet they are now facing more devastation every year. We and the trees share a common ancestor, but today we are more detached from plant life than ever. Plants enliven our window sills and sustain our lives; but what do they mean to us, and what do we mean to them?
The London Reader is issuing an open call for stories, poems, essays, and art about plant people, plants, nature, and our interconnected lives woven tight like roots. Submissions should show how characters like us are connected to plants and nature.

Call for Collages for Cut Me Up Magazine
Deadline: October 11, 2022
Fee: none
Opportunity: Publish work in Cut Me Up Magazine
Location: Brooklyn, NY
Calling all artists who work with collage! We are currently accepting submissions for Cut Me Up Issue 10: Reconnect, and the deadline has been extended to October 10, 2022! https://www.instagram.com/p/CivF1irAwzh/
Cut Me Up Issue 10 marks a return to the roots of Cut Me Up: To relate, respond and connect. For Issue 10, we ask artists to connect with the psychological self-portraits published in Cut Me Up Issue 9: Scars and All, and use these artworks as raw material to make a response artwork. How do these self-portraits resonate with you? It may be the materials, the colors, the textures or the images. It may be what the artist is expressing about their life, how they see themselves, or how that relates to how you see yourself. For Cut Me Up Issue 10, the only criteria are to find the connections. And then respond.
Find full submission details and grab a copy of Cut Me Up Issue 9 to deconstruct at: cutmeupmagazine.com. DM any questions!
Issue 10 marks the five year anniversary of Cut Me Up, and this special issue will be created by Cut Me Up founder/editor an artist, Andrea Burgay (@andreaburgay)
More about Cut Me Up:
Cut Me Up is a participatory magazine of visual call and response founded by Andrea Burgay. Each issue presents a curated selection of original collage images that will become raw material for reader-artists to respond by cutting, reconfiguring, and transforming them into new artworks, in response to curatorial calls addressing contemporary issues. The newly created responses form the content of the next issue.
NOTE: Each issue of Cut Me Up Magazine asks artists to submit work incorporating part of their last issue. I have a copy of Issue 9. Email Julie at art studio sf at gmail with your snailmail address and I'll pop a random page in the mail to you.
The sfai email is just a place holder. To contact the editor of Cut Me Up Magazine, fill out the contact form on their website.

Art for Queering of America Issue of The Museum of Americana Literary Magazine
Deadline: August 31, 2022
Location: n/a
Fees: no
Issue 28: “Queering Americana,” work that queers the focus and perception of traditional Americana. For our August (1-31) submission period we are particularly interested in works from queer folks, especially queer BIPOC. We are also interested in reading submissions from non queer identifying folks whose work somehow still queers Americana.
General Guidelines: the museum of americana accepts submissions of original fiction, nonfiction, poetry, book/chapbook reviews, writer interviews, music, and art. We seek work that showcases, examines, or repurposes historical American culture. This is, of course, an enormous and diverse tub of spare parts, and we want to see what you can create. Give us fiction that dramatizes weird old folk songs or steals their characters. Give us love poetry that mixes language cribbed from The Federalist Papers with language from WWII propaganda posters. We want aspects of Americana we may not have even heard of yet.
Submissions of fiction, nonfiction, humor writing, poetry, and art will be read in the months of April, August, and December. Submissions sent at any other time will be deleted unread. Reviews, interviews, and music for American Songbook will be considered all year round.

Deadline: September 12, 2022
Location: California desert
Fees: not sure
Open to: individuals, collectives and organizations
In the new post-lockdown era, what are we on the brink of? Ecological, democratic and social anxieties demand we remake our futures. Do viable alternatives exist to allow us to cohabit the planet with reimagined technologies, renewable resources, rewired communities and low impact lifestyles? What can be accomplished if it all falls apart? What new horizons can inspire and prepare us?
Thoughtworks Arts seeks two artists-in-residence for separate but parallel residencies on-site at Mars.college, an educational programme, R&D Lab and off-grid residential community in the desert area of Bombay Beach, California. Mars is geographically remote but digitally connected, cultivating a low-cost, high-tech lifestyle exploring emerging technologies.
Artists will receive online incubation and project facilitation through Thoughtworks’ global network of technologists, and a stipend of $11,000 to cover all expenses including transportation and living costs. Mandatory dates of the programme run from 1 January to 31 March 2023, with arrival required at least a few days before the programme commences. The two artists-in-residence will live in RVs (recreational vehicles) in the desert full-time throughout the programme.
Artists are invited to apply to develop a project on one of two themes: ‘Speculative Futures - Do It There, Take It Back To The Neighborhood’ or ‘Alternative AI Creative Infrastructures - The Sky’s The Limit’.
Mars is not able to support large groups or families, or pets, due to the DIY and rugged nature of the living environment, but can support smaller collaborations. If you are applying from a foreign country please check both the visa and immigration policies, as work permits cannot be issued by Thoughtworks Arts or Mars.college. Letters of support for artists grants can be issued.

BSF is an international, juried short film festival, created in 2017 in Barcelona, Spain. BSF screens outstanding short film, animation, docs, experimental and video art. Half Mystic Literary Journal - Call for Art and Musician Interviews
In a piece of poetry, prose, art, or music -- we are interested in music, in every form that takes. More specifically: for the journal, we like pieces that make us rethink the issue’s theme, pieces that serve as incantations and invocations for melody. For the press, we like books that are different from anything we’ve ever published, books that introduce music into their lexicon in stunning and surprising ways. We look for work that defies genre, accounts for the unaccountable, wakes us up, burns us whole. We generally gravitate to the lyrical over the straight-talking and the surreal over the down-to-earth—but also, we like to be surprised.
Featured artist submissions: Send a cover letter (including a biographical note, an artist statement, and a brief description of what music means to you) and five to ten examples of previous art, in any medium. Featured artists illustrate Half Mystic Journal with a suite of 13-15 pieces inspired by the issue’s theme.
Band and musician interview requests: Send a cover letter (including a biographical note, the musical genre in which you primarily work, and your most recent releases), links to where we can find you online, and—if applicable—a press kit. Interviews are published on our blog, sent to our mailing list, and promoted on our social media.

The Loss Show
It’s hard to know where to start isn’t it? How can one possibly begin to address this sense of loss we all feel? Over the last two years so much has gone missing: family, friends, colleagues, romantic relationships, places, institutions, jobs, prospects, plans for travel, stability, safety, a sense of others, a sense of ourselves. Even when we try not to think about it we are conscious of it, ever present, superimposed over our own world, a second one made up of vacuums, sustained fermata, dialogues dropped, cut-outs and silhouettes.
But in our efforts to cope with unrelenting disaster and upheaval, we were forced to push ourselves forever urgently, desperately forward. Which meant we could not take the time to grieve for what had been ripped from us. And on those occasions where we did stop to reflect on it, the burden of it weighed so heavily on us that we hesitated to share it, even with those close to us
…
Tell us what you have lost. In whatever medium you claim. Many of us already have pieces concerning this very subject we began in the last two years that we faltered to bring to completion. We humbly request you take them out and resume where you left off. Whether you choose to propose them for this exhibit or not.
Please email all proposals to fourteenfifteengallery@gmail.com, under the subject heading “The Loss Show /submission” by May 27th.
We are accepting submissions and proposals for solo and group exhibitions, curatorial projects, pop-up events, workshops, performances and other creative experiences.
Proposals should include:
Project description (1 page max)
Up to 10 images or links to audio/video
Email, phone
artist statement (or project/curatorial statement)
Your proposal can also include (optional):
CV/artist resume
brief bio
the month you’d like to show (no guarantees)
social media / web links
Please note: if your project doesn’t exist yet, you can send representative images of your work.
Please email all proposals to fourteenfifteengallery@gmail.com
The Tiny Hand Gallery Proposals:
We are also caretakers for the GRAFT Collective’s Tiny Hand Gallery, which lives in the hallway at fourteenfifteen. The Tiny Hand features tiny works of art and can rotate often. You are welcome to submit ideas for tiny tiny shows just for this special little exhibition space!

Twenty-Something: Call for Submissions
Twenty-Something (July 13 to July 31, 2022) explores the transitional years from childhood to adulthood: the twenties. This exhibition will give a voice to the current challenges that young adults face right here, right now.
In an age where everything is being questioned; gender and sexuality, family dynamics, self-identity, relationship expectations, religion, politics, careers, lifestyle, and even geography; there is an incredible amount of room for interpretation and freedom within this exhibition. The most important thing is that the art reflects each artist’s thoughts and feelings on growing up in this time of great societal change. It can be about the world at large, or about your own experiences, as long as it reflects you and your perspective.
Submission Deadline: June 12, 11: 59 PM
The exhibition will be held in the North Gallery and Online from July 13 to 31, 2022
Submission Fee: $20 + HST for one work; $35 + HST for two works.
Artists who wish to apply must be between the ages of 20 and 29 and are encouraged to submit up to two pieces in any variety of medium or technique, with a maximum width of 40 inches. Each artist is asked to include an artist statement (up to 200 words) explaining the inspiration behind the artwork and how it relates to the themes of the show. This will be included in a downloadable PDF catalogue available through the website.
Applicants must be able to drop off their artwork themselves to Propeller if they want to be considered for the in-person show. Artists may choose to apply for the online exhibition only. Depending on the number of submissions and factoring in the size of the gallery, not all applicants may be selected for the in-gallery exhibition.
Important Dates:
Online Submission deadline: Sunday, June 12th, 2022 11:59 pm
Notification date to selected artists: Sunday, June 19th, 2022

Sustainable Arts Foundation Grants for Artists Who Are Also Parents
Sustainable Arts Foundation will make awards of $5,000 each to twenty artists and writers with children. Additionally, we will name twenty finalists. Our awards offer unrestricted cash, which recipients can use as they see fit. Our selection process is focused almost entirely on the strength of the submitted portfolio.
Eligibility
To be eligible, the applicant must have at least one child under the age of 18. Parents of older children with a disability or special needs may also be eligible.
We are inspired by anyone making creative work while raising a family. Given the intense demand for these awards (we typically receive 2,000-3,000 applications), and the fact that the awards are based on demonstrated excellence in your discipline, we don’t recommend that artists or writers just beginning their creative careers apply to this program.
While we don’t require that applicants have published or exhibited their work, the rigor and critique involved in that process can certainly benefit the portfolio. Portfolios of writing or artwork created in a more personal vein for sharing with friends and family are not suitable. We invite you to view our list of previous awardees and follow the links to their work to get a feel for their level of craft.
Visual artists may apply in one of the following categories:
Book Arts
Ceramics
Drawing
Fiber Arts and Textiles
Illustration
Installation
Jewelry
Mixed Media
Painting
Photography

Sculpture

1.5° CELSIUS at MSU Science Gallery
Deadline February 4, 2022
Submit your questions about the exhibition through the form on their page (link below).
Experimentation, provocation, and research are at the heart of MSU SG’s values and programs. This exhibition will explore the problems and dangers of the Anthropocene and responses to counteract those, through the lens of artists, psychologists, story tellers, digital gamers, molecular biologists, performers, neuroscientists, designers, computer scientists, nurses, engineers, musicians, mathematicians, architects, and young people.
The Anthropocene refers to the current (geological) period distinguished by the extraordinary impact of humankind on the earth. Often, it is used to call attention to the gravest challenges of the near and distant future, involving climate, ecosystems, and people and to encapsulate the time leading, perhaps unstoppably, to the extinction of life on the planet. What steps can we take, and how can we motivate ourselves enough to take them, to halt this epoch’s depredation of the earth? And how can we create a sustainable and respectful relationship with the earth and its ecosystems and its other lifeforms? This question looms over everything else transpiring in the physical and social world.
The impacts associated with a temperature increase of 1.5°C (the target limit set out in the Paris Agreement) above pre-industrial levels would be severe. Such a rise could seem like a distant reality, but we may reach it sooner than we think. Can we stop short of 1.5° Celsius?
Possible Themes and Topics
Can we retire fossil fuel and turn to electrification? What has COVID shown us about the animal kingdom’s ability to respond to different levels of human activity? What role could technology play in reversing destructive trends and practices of the past? What can be learned from Indigenous cultures and practices to create a vision and sustain a gentler, more desirable impact? What kinds of social organization and collaborative practices could move us in a less catastrophic direction?
Your proposal could be a new or existing artwork, performance, workshop, digital intervention, research project, virtual reality game, or other activity. We strongly recommend that you keep our target audience of young people aged 15-25 years in mind and consider including interactive or participatory elements. We would love humor to feature in the exhibition. Check out our FAQ page, for tips on what makes a good submissions, answers to questions, etc. (https://sciencegallery.org/faqs )

Artist Residencies at A Studio in the Woods - Rising: Climate in Crisis
Proposals due March 10th, 2022. Residencies are 6 weeks, September 2022 - May 2023. Recipients will be provided $3000 as a stipend and $2000 towards materials, plus full room and board.
Rising: Climate in Crisis Residencies at A Studio in the Woods invite artists to face the severity of the climate crisis and be agents of change to guide our collective understanding, response, and vision as we shape our shared future. New Orleans and the inhabitants of our region are frequently invoked as some of the most vulnerable to the effects of environmental degradation. While sea levels, temperatures and emotions are rising, our highly manipulated landscape can be seen as a microcosm of the global environment, manifesting both the reckoning and hope which are required in the ways humans interact with shifting urban and natural ecosystems. As the climate crisis permeates the collective understanding of the future, the challenges faced by Southern Louisiana resonate exponentially. We look to artists to ignite our imaginations, illuminate our challenges, and offer new ways to examine the world.
Rising Residencies will provide artists with time, space, scholarship and staff support to foster critical thinking and creation of new works. The call is open to artists of all disciplines who have demonstrated an established dialogue with environmental and culturally related issues and a commitment to seeking and plumbing new depths. We ask artists to describe in detail how the region will affect their work, to propose a public component to their residency and to suggest ways in which they will engage with the local community.
ARTIST ELIGIBILITY
Local, national, and international visual, musician/composing, performance, literary, new media, and interdisciplinary artists are eligible to apply. Both established and emerging artists may apply, but a dedicated practice and demonstrated commitment to public engagement are expected. Artists of color are encouraged to apply and we are particularly interested in receiving applications from Indigenous artists. Students enrolled in full time degree-seeking programs are not eligible. Collaborative teams of up to two artists can be in residence, please see our FAQ for more information on how to apply as a collaborative team.
SELECTION PROCESS A multidisciplinary jury comprised of artists, arts professionals and environmental activists will review applications in two rounds. The first round will happen asynchronously and jurors will review and rank all applications. Top contenders will be moved to a second round that happens live. We offer to share anonymized jury feedback to all applicants. The jury will judge proposals on the following criteria:
The creativity and integrity of the proposal
Demonstrated ability to collaborate with colleagues and wider audiences
Projects that are deeply respectful of the communities and individuals with whom they interact
The proposal’s public component and its depth of engagement with the community

IMPORTANT DATES
FIRST DEADLINE: January 30, 2022
EXTENDED DEADLINE (submission fee increase to $35):* February 6, 2022
NOTIFICATIONS: Sunday, February 20, 2022
—-
ARTWORKS DELIVERED DEADLINE: Saturday, March 26, 2022
—-
EXHIBITION DATES: April 7 – May 14, 2022
*The submission fee is $30 until the first deadline. The submission fee will then increase to $35 per submission for an extended deadline . WMG offers fee waivers to those that request the need and upon approved application.
This curatorial concept is taken from Sundus Abdul Hadi’s book “Take Care of Your Self: The Art and Cultures of Care and Liberation” and seeks artwork in any medium that explores the following:
“Deeply-rooted is an empowered word to describe any person or community rooted in an ancient culture steeped in traditional and Indigenous knowledge that colonization attempted to erase. It is a word that attempts to describe the multiplicity of ethnicities and experiences related to the international Indigenous, Black, Pan-African, Afro-descendent, Arab, Brown, Latinx, South American, and Asian communities.
Transcultural communities, in all our diversity, have much in common. However, to truly be in solidarity with one another, we must celebrate our differences rather than skim over them in an attempt to boost our similarities. Just as in a family, or a forest, each individual is completely different from the others, I see our interconnected communities as relatives. We are members of an international family with much to learn and teach one another, nurtured through a sophisticated system of roots. The experiences of struggle, unbelonging, colonialism, and marginalization have affected communities the world over, particularly when displaced and uprooted in so-called Western societies.
Every time I would use or read words like “marginalized”, “people of colour”, “global south”, “BIPOC” or “colonized”, I found them limiting in describing the multitude of experiences of a rich diversity of people they claim to represent. These words are often white-centering and are unimaginative. I coined the term deeply-rooted in place of words that identify us as inferior, marginal, or secondary to whiteness. I use this word to describe the multiplicity of ethnicities who are connected not just through struggle, but through deeply rooted ancient identities, familiar spirits, and shared experiences of resistance to white supremacy and colonialism.
This exhibit seeks to center the experiences of the deeply-rooted, through a decolonial lens. By reflecting on both ancestry and futurity, we will collectively offer new narratives, definitions and representations of what it means to be both ancient and novel in a world on the cusp of change.” – Sundus Abdul Hadi
The juror is interested in questions around the following :
Tell us a story about deep roots.
How does it feel to be deeply-rooted?
As deeply-rooted people, how can we see ourselves into the future?
How can we honor our roots and ancestry in our acknowledgement of our plural identities?
How can we define ourselves outside of the limits of the colonial construct while using the English language?
How can we imagine ourselves differently from the way we have been represented by those outside of our communities?
How can we create new narratives to alleviate the burden of constant correction that is placed on the shoulders of many deeply rooted artists?
What does transcultural solidarity mean for you?
Imagine a world where colonialism never happened.
Show us decolonization in practice.

It is operated in France by an endowment fund and by a 501c3 in the United States.
Fellowships overview
KADIST San Francisco offers two six-month collection fellowships to recent or 2022 graduates of art history, museum studies, critical writing, or a related field from college or university programs (BA or MA). Remote positions with bi-monthly online meetings are negotiable.

Fellow-created collection content—images and written descriptions of artworks and artists’ practices, among other materials—will serve as a resource for curators, team members, and advisors in supporting new additions to the online library, creating exhibitions, and more. Selected fellows’ texts will be published on the KADIST website.
Responsibilities

– Knowledge of contemporary artists’ practices, artworks, ideas, and art scenes in either the Americas or Asia
– Fluency in writing concise descriptions of artworks and artist biographies
– Willingness to engage in research practices, spontaneous discussion, and considered argument
– Attention to detail with rigorous administrative and multi-tasking skills
– Ability to work autonomously while being proactive, communicative, and open to feedback
– Fluency in both spoken and written English is mandatory
Position Details
Each fellowship requires a six-month commitment, an average of eight hours a week. Each fellow will receive a stipend of USD 5,000 for the duration of the fellowship. Remote positions with periodic online meetings are negotiable. The fellowship period will begin the week of February 7 or 14, 2022.
One fellowship will focus on researching artists working and living in the Americas while the other will focus on artists working and living in Asia.
Application
For immediate consideration, please send a resume, a short letter of interest (up to 400 words), and 3 writing samples by January 9, 2022 at 11:59 pm PT to jobs@kadist.org. Please indicate “Americas Fellowship” or “Asia Fellowship” in the subject line depending on the fellowship you wish to apply for. A shortlist of finalists will be invited for interviews.
Equal Opportunity

religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or protected veteran status. Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) are strongly encouraged to apply.

$1200 – moving a grandfather clock from Syracuse, NY, to Denver, CO
I'm trying to get my 2nd great-grandfather's grandfather clock shipped to me in Denver, but because of the state of the shipping industry, no one is shipping art and antiques. Do you know anyone in the Syracuse-area with a van who'd be interested in a road trip to the Rockies? The clock 8 feet tall and already wrapped in furniture blankets. Featuring Mexico City-based artist Minerva Cuevas, created in collaboration with the University of Texas-El Paso Rubin Center, this multi-sited transnational project is conceived with the broad understanding that migration is a natural process that includes non-human species. An exhibition at the Rubin Center, together with a free companion publication and cultural interventions in Ciudad Juárez, will relate to actions of dissidence in the ecology of migration that respond to regional, social, and environmental crises.
This publication is made possible with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Warhol Foundation, the University of New Mexico Center for Environmental Arts & Humanities, and the University of Texas-El Paso.

The Writer's Room at The Betsy
A working studio space for visiting writers and artists to create, develop their craft and share their work through community programs, The Writer’s Room pays homage to the many ‘writing rooms’ that existed in pre-war hotels where guests recorded memories and linked to home.
Artists in Residence use a desk donated to The Betsy by the Hyam Plutzik Centennial Committee to commemorate the poet’s sojourn as a soldier in Florida during the 1940’s on his way to war. Born over 100 years ago, and a three-time Pulitzer Prize finalist before his death, Hyam Plutzik is the father of The Betsy Hotel owner, Jonathan Plutzik.
Residencies
Since The Writer’s Room opened in 2012, more than 1000 working writers (and other creatives) have stayed at The Betsy and engaged in community service programs.
The Writer’s Room at The Betsy hosts professional artists in all disciplines (in the visual arts we host digital artists only) year round. While artists in all disciplines are encouraged to apply, The Betsy program has a sweet spot for poets. Residencies at The Betsy are typically Sunday through Wednesday. In some circumstances, residencies can be a full week. There is no charge to stay in The Writer’s Room. In exchange for the opportunity, visiting writers are asked to:
Contribute a written piece to our blog (open format)
Participate in a community event to introduce and discuss their work
Donate a recent publication (if available) to one of The Betsy's libraries.
*Writers are eligible to reapply for residency after three years.

Zip US Up!™ Call for Artists
Giant, Diversity-Based, Collaborative Art Project Launches. 40 Artists from around the country to be chosen. Applications being accepted.
When we all come together, we can create something more meaningful than each of us individually”— David BloomBIRMINGHAM, MICHIGAN, U.S., May 21, 2021 /EINPresswire.com/ -- Artists from around the country are invited to apply to paint a segment of canvas that when zipped together will create a giant public mural called Zip US Up!™. Organizer David Bloom said the name represents a combination of diversity, creativity, and collaboration which will result in a 175-foot long unified and highly visible work of art using real zippers to join forty canvas segments together. The mural will be displayed in the windows of the newly opened Youth Wing of the Baldwin Public Library, overlooking the city's central plaza in downtown Birmingham, Michigan, a Metropolitan Detroit community.
What Is It?
Zip US Up!™ is an artistic statement that affirms when we all come together, we can create something more meaningful than each of us individually. Per Bloom, this past year has shown that we all need to reach out and respectfully collaborate if our society is going to collectively improve itself and prosper for everyone’s benefit.
What Makes This Project Unique?
Forty artists selected from the Call for Entry will be assigned and provided with an 18” (H) x 56” (L) primed canvas panel that has been prepared for hanging with half of a multicolored Riri metal zipper sewn along each side.
Participating artists will be asked to collaborate with the adjacent artists assigned to the right and left of them to make a cohesive piece of artwork that uniquely represents their artistic style—while using the predetermined connecting points provided on the canvas. There is no requirement on theme, genre, colors, or style provided there is some visible form of cohesion/transition and/or flow between the adjacent panels.
Upon completion, the canvases will be zipped together to create a 175-foot mural to be on display for an eight-month exhibit from October 2021 through May 2022. Segments will be available for sale and sent to purchasers following the exhibition.
Who Picks the Artists?
The jury panel is composed of the following:
• Barbara Heller—Director and Conservator of Special Projects at the Detroit Institute of Arts and Birmingham Public Arts Board Chair
• Laura Whitesides Host—Artist and instructor at the Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center and Lawrence Street Gallery co-owner
• Chad Smith—Drummer for the Red Hot Chili Peppers and philanthropist
• Ilham Mahfouz—Syrian American artist whose artwork has been shown in the U.S. and abroad
• Gerard Marti – Owner/Artist of the Townsend Street Gallery
• David Chung—University of Michigan MFA Program Director/Artist
• Doran Brooks—Executive Chef/Operator of White Wolf Patisserie in Clawson, MI
• Izegbe D. N’Namdi—Executive Director, N’Namdi Center for Contemporary Art in Detroit
• Joyce Riamando—Artist/Author, Founding Director of the Imagine That! Co-op and Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center Education Coordinator in Long Island, NY
• Aaron Cohen—Library consultant and architect/artist
Awards
• 1st Prize: $2,100 (or higher based on additional fundraising) equally divided between the 3 artists with the best collaboration.
• 2nd and 3rd prizes (TBD based on additional fundraising)
• SEE sunglasses will be raffled to one of the selected artists
Artists are invited to apply through CaFĖ™ by sharing examples of their work with a deadline of June 16th. https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=8913.

freedom of speech?
My girlfriend (a former SFAI employee) is being constantly harassed by alumni who call themselves the Kazoo 5. There is a series videos that are being shared and false statements made to cyber bullying from members of the community.
This needs to stop now!
Publicly shaming a person and posting their new place of work is frightening and stalker like.
If you clearly don’t understand the hurt you are causing .
Here are a few definitions to help.
Definition of Freedom of Speech: the right to express any opinions without censorship or restraint.
Well you can say what you want but there are consequences for actions. In a public form there should be respect .
Definition of Harassment : targeted someone based on race, color, national origin, ancestry, gender, religion, religious practice, age, disability or sexual orientation.
Now Stalking generally refers to a clear pattern of conduct through which the perpetrator causes the victim reasonable fear for their safety or their family's safety. Interstate stalking is a federal crime
Which you have caused al of the above Margret Bradley with your video.
Some states punish stalking as a form of "menacing." Menacing can often include ongoing actions, such as stalking someone, which cause reasonable fear in the victim. Menacing also often includes single acts which are purposefully intended to create a reasonable fear in someone, such as brandishing a weapon.
This is what the community has allowed the Kazoo 5 to do.
Maybe, just maybe you can be apart of a community instead of tearing it apart. Blame the institution not the person.

SFMOMA Podcast – Raw Material
Request For Proposal
The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art is excited to produce the newest season of our awardwinning arts and culture podcast, Raw Material. Each season, SFMOMA partners with a different
podcaster-in-residence to explore contemporary art in an expanded field.
Investigating the myriad intersections within the sphere of arts and culture, Raw Material is not bound
to works in SFMOMA’s collection or the walls that house them. This season, we are interested in
proposals related to themes of interconnectivity, access, and kinship in the Black community. Proposal
submissions will be considered from March 8
th – May 1st 2021.
Through this Request for Proposal (RFP), SFMOMA seeks a production partner for Season 7 of Raw
Material, which will consist of 6 episodes to be released weekly or bi-weekly starting October 2021. The
term of the contract is from May 2021 to January 2022.
Content
SFMOMA aims to partner with producers who have a shared interest in telling engaging stories that are
thoughtful and informed. Through compelling narratives, we will provide rich aural experiences that
expand the world of art to listeners of all audiences. Foregrounding human-centered stories over
scholarly authority, and highlighting the value of the audience, Raw Material engages with art in a way
that is accessible. Interconnectedness is a theme that aligns with these goals and is a concept we
encourage submissions to explore. Here are a few podcasts we’re listening to for Season 7 inspiration:
The Nod: How To Make Free People
You Had Me At Black - At the House: Radical Imagination
Power Not Pity – The Ancestors Woke Me Up
Disability Visibility Project – Ep.92 Disabled Afro-Latina Artists
1619: Episode 3: The Birth of American Music
Scope

length. The term for this work will run from May 2021 to January 2022 and entail:

Since the 1980s, SFMOMA has been a pioneer in the arts and technology. In 2005, SFMOMA became
one of the first fine art museums to create a podcast. The “SFMOMA Artcast” was a bimonthly digest of
goings-on at the museum, published for over a decade, making it one of the longest-running arts and
culture podcasts to-date. It was described to audiences as “bringing you closer to the voices of artists,
writers, curators, musicians, and visitors as they respond to artworks on view at SFMOMA.” When the
museum re-launched in 2016, so did its podcast, newly titled Raw Material and newly focused outside
the walls of the museum. Each season focuses on “Art and...” an intersecting theme such as sexuality,
social justice, the land, the occult. Moving forward, our continued mission will be to explore the ways in
which this podcast can push through the boundaries of the institution and expand access to the arts
through audio storytelling.
Copyright/Museum Ownership
SFMOMA shall own and control in perpetuity all rights, in and to, all content produced for the Museum,
including the copyrights and other intellectual property rights. Vendor must provide content in final
edited audio files via ftp and CD or DVD in both uncompressed WAV and MP3 file formats. If delivered
via ftp, a final CD or DVD backup is required. Vendor must provide full, unedited transcripts and audio
recordings of actualities. Vendor must provide both standard and large-print digital copies of finalized
scripts. In addition, Vendor must provide signed release copies for all talent not employed by SFMOMA.
RFP Proposal Content and Format:
To facilitate an expedient and objective evaluation of all submitted responses, it is essential that all
Vendors adhere to the desired response format articulated below. The Museum may modify or clarify
the RFP by written notice to or in correspondence with prospective Vendors. Additional information
beyond what is requested below and deemed relevant by the Vendor will be accepted, but responses
not satisfying this minimum standard will not be considered.
Section 1. Executive Summary: Please provide a statement that describes why SFMOMA should choose
you as its partner in podcast content production. Describe your vision, proposed Season 7 thematic
overview, outline for at least one sample episode, and high-level summary of project management
approach, delivery model, and a statement of differentiation that would set you aside from your
competition.
Section 2. Professional Information: In order to assess your compatibility, we would like to have
information on your professional history, background, experience, and qualifications. Please provide
resumés of key personnel.
Section 3. Creative Work Samples: Describe your experience and knowledge working with media

Animating Civic Action for Students
Animating Civic Action for Students
Project Announcement for Independent Contractors
The Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) is looking for eight artists to visualize and animate stories to inspire civic engagement.
OSPI has an ambitious project to support civic engagement in public K–12 schools throughout Washington state. Civic discourse is essential in shaping our understanding of a more inclusive, diverse, equitable, and just society. The goal of this project is to support our educators with inspiring content and materials to facilitate civil discourse within their classrooms.
A story-centric approach:
We plan to create eight animated stories gathered from individuals with experiences in one of the eight defined keystone topics outlined below. Each contributor's story—the individual sharing their story—will be professionally recorded and edited to an estimated length of 8–11 minutes. This story will be the foundation for the animation. Our goal is to preserve the authenticity of the story while protecting the identity of the contributor. Some stories will be challenging to hear—and that is the point. These stories are prompts for the conversations we need to start having to grow. That is why we are taking a story-centric to inspiring civic engagement.
Here is an example of a story:
https://youtu.be/ug4uSzHOF3A
Selected artists will receive an edited interview with an estimated length of 8–11 minutes. OSPI will also include notes and supporting materials based on the interview. Minimal art direction will be provided. We are expecting your original authorship, creativity, and artistic expression to visualize these stories. You will have to create a world and the characters living in that world in any medium you see fit, as long as the final format can be played as a video. We will provide the edited interview, and we want your original authorship for the animated visualization based on the provided recorded story. This project affords the opportunity for you to do your work, the way you see it. However, we must adhere to our mission, vision, and values stated below. We will not accept content that appears insensitive, perpetuates stereotypes, or drastically deviates from the provided storyline.
Admiring Hardship vs. Amplifying Voices:
Our goal isn't to admire the hardship that our story contributors are facing. Our priority is to bring others into an individual's experience to gain empathy, appreciation, and illuminate a pathway to empower change. Civic action starts by understanding the experience, the context, and areas where we can improve as a community. The civic action component engages students to push beyond appreciation and awareness, and to harness their voice and agency to make a difference.
What is Civics?
Civics is not just the branches of government. Students must understand that in a constitutional democracy, healthy communities are built and maintained by effective, continued participation in civic life. Additionally, students should be provided with the tools and support to learn how to effectively act on issues they care about. To this end, the Social Studies team within OSPI, in collaboration with educational partners, is developing this project to help students and educators recognize opportunities for student civic engagement by highlighting civic problems and solutions.
2021 Civics Topics We Are Animating:
Youth Experiencing Homelessness
Environmental Justice
Disability Justice
Racial Justice
Immigration and Migration
Impacts of incarceration
Tribal sovereignty and Native identity
LGBTQIA+
Project Outline:
The components of each animated short consists of the following:
A recorded interview from a contributor provided by OSPI.
The artist will provide a treatment for the animation for approval. The treatment will include the art direction, storyboard, primary character development, and additional elements that require communication to understand the animation as a whole.
The artist will provide an original animated video. This video will be the original work of the selected artist. Incorporated elements under copyright will be rejected.
OSPI has resources you can use like Musicbed.com. The artist will be required to select music (if that’s your direction) and time the animation to those incorporated audio elements.
Empowering Youth Voice:
Once animated shorts have been produced, education partners will create civic lessons correlated to each animated story. We anticipate these lessons will cross content areas, grade levels, and meet multiple Social Studies Learning Standards for and bring a valuable teaching tool to social studies educators across Washington state. Animators will be credited in the final product. Final materials will be licensed under Creative Commons and distributed without charge. This product will not be permitted for resale.
About OSPI and our initiatives
OSPI is the primary agency charged with overseeing public K–12 education in Washington state. Working with the state's 295 public school districts and 6 state-tribal education compact schools, OSPI allocates funding and provides tools, resources, and technical assistance so every student in Washington is provided a high-quality public education.

Vision, Mission, and Values
Vision: All students prepared for post-secondary pathways, careers, and civic engagement.
Mission: Transform K-12 education to a system that is centered on closing opportunity gaps and is characterized by high expectations for all students and educators. We achieve this by developing equity-based policies and supports that empower educators, families, and communities.
Values: Ensuring Equity, Collaboration and Service, Achieving Excellence through Continuous Improvement, Focus on the Whole Child
Equity
Each student, family, and community possesses strengths and cultural knowledge that benefits their peers, educators, and schools. Ensuring educational equity:
Goes beyond equality; it requires education leaders to examine the ways current policies and practices result in disparate outcomes for our students of color, students living in poverty, students receiving special education and English Learner services, students who identify as LGBTQIA+, and highly mobile student populations.
Requires education leaders to develop an understanding of historical contexts; engage students, families, and community representatives as partners in decision-making; and actively dismantle systemic barriers, replacing them with policies and practices that ensure all students have access to the instruction and support they need to succeed in our schools.
Submission Process:
Please submit your portfolio to the OSPI Communications Office at commteam@k12.wa.us. Submissions without a portfolio or examples of your work will not be considered. Include ‘Animating Civic Action’ in the subject of the email. Reels are great, but we would also like to see how you handle the story from start to finish through examples of completed work. We will do our first round of reviews on March 24th, and close submissions April 1st.
We want to know if this project connects with you. Please provide a statement of interest.
Please provide a short statement with how you would approach the attached story titled, 'Jared.' The link is provided above. One to two paragraphs are sufficient.
We will ask the successful candidate to work remotely during this time, as our office remains open only in limited capacity. Please provide a statement affirming you will be able to complete this project remotely.
Time Schedule and budget:
Stories are not identical in complexity. We have allotted 6–8 weeks to produce each animated short. We are planning for a project start date of April 1, 2021 for each animation artist. Our budget is $900–1,300 weekly with a 6–8 week timeline per animation. If you are awarded the contract, rates and schedules will be negotiated based on the length and complexity of the story. Each animation would need to be completed by June 30th.
We appreciate your consideration for this project. We are looking forward to seeing your work, and thank you for your time.

A.I.R. Fellowship Program
The A.I.R. Fellowship Program was established in 1993 by former artist member, Stephanie Bernheim, in order to support underrepresented and emerging self-identified women and non-binary artists in New York City. Each year, six artists are awarded a year-long fellowship to develop and exhibit a project at A.I.R.
In the last 25 years, more than 100 artists have had the opportunity to have their first solo exhibition in New York City with the support of the A.I.R. community. This program encourages artistic experimentation and rigor by providing a space where feminist historical precedence and intergenerational dialogue are at the forefront. Essential to this process is a series of professional development workshops, close collaboration with an A.I.R. artist-mentor, scheduled studio visits through the year—including one with the panelists—and participation in the Unforgettables Reading/Working Group.
Since 2009, A.I.R. Gallery names one yearly A.I.R. Fellowship seat in memory of the artist, activist, writer, and feminist Emma Bee Bernstein (1985-2008). In recognition of Emma’s significant contributions as a young artist, the youngest A.I.R. Fellowship recipient receives the honor of holding the Emma Bee Bernstein Fellowship.

The 14TH A.I.R. Biennial
The Biennial exhibition An A-Historical Daydream will investigate an idea of malleable time and space across a variety of histories. Histories are often singular narratives: they are agendized and unbalanced, and often promote a binary idea of ‘us vs. them’ or ‘conqueror and conquered.’ This exhibition invites artists to reconsider the popular histories that we have been taught, and to then radically imagine a space-time dimension in which colonialism—and hegemonic structures—never existed or existed in a different form. The exhibition asks artists to examine the breadth of speculative possibilities from both micro and macro angles. Artists can choose to focus on singular themes that are often associated with historical moments or identities, or they may choose to take a more directly narrative approach to fully exploring the possibility of entirely new worlds.
